Unmasking the Python Spirit, His Network, and Walking Out Your Authority Over the Enemy

Today we’re going to continue our series on Divination, dive more into the Python spirit, and unravel how he gains entrance into a person’s life.

And it came to pass, as we went to prayer[1], a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour (Acts 16:16-18).

The word divination here is the Greek word python[2]. Soothsaying can simply be interpreted “fortune-telling” (NLT). Now, I want to focus on this very next verse; “The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation”. Verse seventeen reveals how this spirit gets into one’s life. I want you to go back and read it again. Do you see it? No. Go back and read it one more time.

The Python Spirit Networks with Both Ego and Lust

Notice, this spirit is not lying, as Jennifer Eivaz pointed out in our last devotion. So, how does this spirit gain entrance; “These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation”. This demonic entity is looking for an entrance of Ego[3] and Lust[4] to gain access into Paul’s life.

Ego is when we desire to exalt ourselves. This is when the Python spirit is trying to attach to their flesh. If he can get Paul and his companions to entertain thoughts of Self-Importance and the desire of the praise of man; then he will enter and gain a stronghold.

You must remember, Paul was originally Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:1-19), a Pharisee (Philippians 3:5). The Pharisees were known to love the praise of man more than God (Matthew 6:2[5]). This demonic being was sifting Paul to see if he still had that old Pharisaical spirit in him (Luke 22:31); if he could be lavished with honor and attention.

Notice, this slave girl was popular around town. She already had a following in the city. When she prophesied her words, most likely, came to past; just like Balaam’s (Numbers 22:6, NIV). This messenger[6] wasn’t using the girl to deceive with words, but rather motivation of the heart (Proverbs 16:2).

The Python spirit was looking for the motivation of lust within Paul’s heart. He was trying to deceive these men of God.  By being popular around town, she could have used her influence to build the Kingdom. The Python spirit was using the girl’s reputation to build a following for Paul and his travelers. But Paul didn’t buy it!

Your Authority Over the Python Spirit Must Be Walked Out in Your Day-to-Day Life

Paul, sensed in his spirit what was going on with this girl[7]. What’s interesting is Paul simply cast the Python spirit out. He didn’t ask the girl if she wanted to be free, he just did it. So, question here. Why did Paul wait so long to cast it out? It says that she followed Paul for “many days”. So, why didn’t he cast the Python spirit out of her the first time it raised its ugly head?

Because he didn’t have the authority yet. You may be thinking, “What do you mean he didn’t have the authority. Jesus said, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy….” (Luke 10:19, NIV). True, He did give us all power over the enemy. But our power is impotent until it is walked out. Paul, had to first be tested[8]. After he was tested; after he was sifted by the Python spirit (Luke 22:31), and passed, this is what gave him the authority, that dynamis[9] power to cast the spirit out.

Notice, the spirit came out within an hour[10]. If Paul would have not first been tested, and passed, then he would had been tried when casting the spirit out. And the Python spirit would have taken maybe hours to overcome. But he didn’t. The Python spirit, the great spirit[11], was easily cast out once the man of God was proven.

[1]Prayer is one of the key points of Divination. That’s why this spirit is so deceptive.

[3] Some spirits associated with Ego are Pride, Self-Importance, and Arrogance. Divination is always associated with haughty spirits.

[4]As Pastor Allen Sharp always said, “Lust is the opposite of love. Where love is giving at the expense of self, lust is taking at the expense of someone’ else”.

[5]Pharisees loved the praise of man. When they gave of their finances, they did it with trumpets sounding, lol. Imagine, being so full of self you pay people to sound trumpets whenever you give. Not only that, when they prayed they shouted and did it in front of everyone. Jesus said, “they have received their reward in full” (Mat 6:2, NIV).

[6]The word angel simply means "messenger". Therefore, a demonic spirit is actually a demonic messenger.

[7]Paul was able to sense what was going on through the gift of discerning of spirits  (1 Corinthians 12:10),

[8]Just like Jesus in the wilderness (Mat 4:1-11), He had to first be tested of the enemy for His power to be walked out. Once this was accomplished, His power was manifested. And the Word says, “So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time” (Luke 4:13, NET). But the enemy never found a more opportune time (John 14:30).

[9]Dynamis is a Greek word, which we derive our worddynamitefrom.

[10]A lot of us hold to a belief that demons come out within a couple minutes. Not true. Most take several years to break off an individual because of the stronghold in the mind, and the distortion in the heart.

[11]The Python spirit was a principality (Jennifer Eivaz).
